Airings Of An Undercover Athlete
One of our Boot Camp athletes, Tabatha Goynes is going to be publishing a series of articles that she calls: “Airings Of An Undercover Athlete”. It’s good. Here is the first one.
Airings of an Undercover Athlete
That’s me, an undercover athlete. Undercover because, well, I’m fat. I am saying that I have an excess of fat stored in my body that serves no purpose other than to deplete my energy and piss me off in the dressing room. Athlete, that’s a little tougher. I started training with Jim (Mahan) in September. He has a gym in Harker Heights call Absolute Self Defense and Fitness. What’s in a name, they say? Well, for me, this name was 95% intimidation and 5% pure fear. I wrote a testimonial a couple of months ago that gives a little back story. Since this is my first blog of this sort, I thought it would be a good idea to re-post it here.
Throughout my school years and young adult life I was always active. I stayed in good shape. I never really had to worry about my size. I knew I could fluctuate within a 10lb range without a problem. Then, six years ago I had my first child. After I gave birth to my son, I was shocked at how my body looked. It was November & having a new baby I didn’t want to take him for walks or leave him with anyone. Basically, I was sedentary for 4 months. Four months that went by in a wink. The next thing I knew I was trying on a size bigger in jeans and they were too tight! I tried my old ways off dropping weight, and they didn’t work. I became so depressed that I gave up. Mom’s can be fat, right? Three kids, six years, and 80 lbs later I was ready to take back my body. I tried fad diets, gyms, food delivery systems, pills; you name it. One day I came across an advertisement for the Fighting Fit Fitness Bootcamp in Harker Heights. Truth be told, I was intimidated. I am not one for stepping out of my comfort zone. I thought, if it doesn’t kill me & I don’t die of embarrassment, I’ll try it for a week. I have NEVER been happier with a work out. Jim (Mahan) is the coach that facilitates the bootcamp. Number one, he is awesome. He is a cheerleader, coach, teacher, and buddy rolled into one. He told me “everyone starts somewhere.” Truer words have never been spoken. I have made tremendous improvements over the past 4 weeks. I have increased my strength, range of motion, & stamina. I have decreased my waist, hips, thighs, & back pain. I am excited to see what I can do next!
That’s it, in a nutshell. I found so many people, not just women, relate to my story. If people can relate to my testimony then I am positive they will be able to relate to my journey. Here I am, for all the world to see. Airing my dirty laundry. Not really dirty, but super sweaty. Watch what happens as I try to uncover my hidden athlete.
