Why Do You Sneeze?

Getting inside your nostrils and the cause for all those noisy achoos!

There is never a good time to sneeze. You’re eating dinner with a new client, talking with your new sweet thing, or driving in rush-hour traffic, and all of a sudden it hits. There’s no holding it back, so you have to let the sneeze get through. But why do you sneeze in the first place?

Behind the Sneezing Curtain

Simply stated, you sneeze when your body senses something is hanging out in your nostrils that doesn’t belong there. Unwanted intruders include everything from dust and dirt to viruses and pet dander. As soon as the prowlers are located, the muscles necessary for sneezing kick into action to get rid of them.
As helpful as sneezes can be, they can also occur when not required.

Unneeded sneezes come about when your body thinks something dangerous shows up. Known as allergies, these unproblematic troublemakers come in the form of pet dander, pollen, and other normal items in your environment. You may even find yourself sneezing when you go outside and feel a sudden burst of bright sunshine. Actually, sun-induced sneezing is so common that it has a special name: photic sneezing.

Stopping a Freight Train

You may have heard that it’s not a good idea to stop a sneeze. You may have even heard that trying to do so is equivalent to stopping a speeding train. Believe it or not, this information is true. And yes, sneezes really can reach speeds as high as 100 miles per hour.

Trying to keep these speedy sneezes from shooting out in a loud outburst may be a nice thought, but doing so can be dangerous. Some people who have stopped their sneezes in takeoff have bitten their tongues, others have suffered ringing in their ears, and yet others have damaged their teeth or had their esophagus injured. At the least, stopping a sneeze keeps your body from doing what it is trying to do – protect you from foreign substances.

Cover It Up

Since sneezes will come when they want and there is very little you can do about it, the best thing you can do is to be prepared. When you feel a sneeze coming on, grab a tissue or napkin and cover your mouth. Doing this keeps your germs from being propelled out of your mouth and onto someone else. And in case you’re accustomed to sneezing into your hand, don’t!

Instead, when you’re not privy to the conveniences of a tissue or napkin, sneeze into your inner elbow. This way, you won’t have germs all over your hand when you go to shake hands with someone else, open a doorknob, or pick up a community telephone.

Prevent the Explosion

No, you can’t and shouldn’t stop a sneeze that shows up out of nowhere. But in the event you feel a sneeze coming on and have a few seconds to react, it is possible to stifle it before it gets to launch time. Or at least some people think it is.

If you want to stifle a sneeze before it’s too late, try the following ideas the next time you feel a sneeze coming on:

  • suck on the tip of your finger
  • wiggle your earlobe gently
  • think intensely about your favorite fruit – its texture, shape, color, what it smells like when you cut it open, etc.
  • breathe deeply
  • hold your breath
  • chew a piece of spearmint gum
  • exhale all of your breath (this will not stop the sneeze, but minimize the severity)

Angel Food Cake!

Classic angel food cake, light and tastes great by itself!

Categories: Desserts, Low Calorie, Low Sodium, Low Fat, Low Cholesterol, Dairy-Free, Vegetarian

Here’s What You Need
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 12 egg whites
  • 1 cup cake flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. Be sure that your 10 inch tube pan is clean and dry.
  3. Any amount of oil or residue could deflate the egg whites.
  4. Sift together the flour, and 3/4 cup of the sugar, set aside.
  5. In a large bowl, whip the egg whites along with the vanilla, cream of tartar and salt, to medium stiff peaks.
  6. Gradually add the remaining sugar while continuing to whip to stiff peaks.
  7. When the egg white mixture has reached its maximum volume, fold in the sifted ingredients gradually, one third at a time.
  8. Do not overmix.
  9. Put the batter into the tube pan.
  10. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes in the preheated oven, until the cake springs back when touched.
  11. Balance the tube pan upside down on the top of a bottle, to prevent decompression while cooling.
  12. When cool, run a knife around the edge of the pan and invert onto a plate.

Investigating Alkaline Water

Is it absolutely fabulous or a fraud?

Imagine being able to turn your bad health into optimal health, regain the energy of your youth, and feel better than you have in years – all by drinking a little bit of water. It may sound preposterous, but it’s what advocates for alkaline water claim.

If you’ve ever been approached about some of this seemingly miraculous water, you may have wondered about the real truth behind this H2O. Well, here it is.

Reasoning behind Alkaline

According to alkaline water drinkers, you can’t have good health unless you have enough alkaline in your body. Otherwise, you will have too much acid in your body, which can lead to all sorts of health maladies affecting virtually any and every part of your body. The most obvious symptoms of an overly acidic system include fatigue, aches and pains, and low energy.

In order to combat these potential issues, alkaline water lovers insist all you have to do is drink some of the water they have to offer. It comes in all sorts of containers and sizes and you can even buy drops to add to your normal water to turn it into alkaline-strong water. But wait – there’s more!

Some More Potential Perks

As if overcoming and avoiding fatigue and low energy weren’t enough to get you in the mood for some pain-reducing alkaline water, it seems there are even more reasons to go for this improved water. It is also thought to help your body better use and absorb nutrients from the foods you eat. This means you not only feel better from the water itself, but your body is better able to keep you going strong even when you’re not sipping on alkaline.

Top this off with an improved ability to age slower than your friends, and alkaline water seems to be more miracle cure than common household drink. But it still seems a bit too good to be true, doesn’t it? After all, if something as simple as alkaline water could make you live longer and feel better, everyone would know about it and would be drinking it nonstop. Right?

What the Science Says

At this time, there is no scientific study that backs up any claims made by the alkaline-drinking public. There is, however, a bit of evidence that bone loss can be slowed through drinking alkaline water, but that research has not been maintained long term, making it difficult to determine whether a lifetime of alkaline water means a lifetime of bone protection.

Instead of alkaline water, you will get plenty of what your body needs by drinking regular old water out of the tap. And if you feel the need to decrease your body’s intake of acid, you can always do it through a more cost-effective manner: your grocer’s fresh food aisle. A few foods to avoid if you want to reduce your body’s acidity include citrus fruits, red meat, coffee, and sugar. To boost your alkaline levels at the same time, eat spinach, peas, tomatoes, avocadoes, and almonds. If nothing else, these dietary changes will help you consume less fat and will result in better health, regardless of your thoughts on alkaline.

Battery Power

Your body isn’t the only thing that is powered by alkaline. Many batteries are as well. Within an alkaline battery, a chemical reaction is required to produce the electrical energy needed to power your favorite electronics.

In an alkaline battery, zinc and manganese dioxide must react to set the energy production into effect. When these chemicals no longer react with one another and lose their charges, the battery is deemed dead and useless.
